The System Dynamics Italian Chapter (SYDIC) is participating in the 2026 Science Festival in Genoa with a special event entitled “Saving the Future of the Climate: Today We Decide – Simulating Climate Policies with En-ROADS,” scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, at 6:00 PM at Villa Pallavicino delle Peschiere, Genoa.

The meeting, curated by SYDIC, will be facilitated by Stefano Armenia, Francesco Berveglieri, Stefania Migliavacca and Riccardo Parigi and will offer the public the opportunity to directly experience how systems thinking and simulation can help us understand the complexity of climate change and evaluate the consequences of possible intervention strategies.

The public at the center of the simulation

The meeting will feature two protagonists: En-ROADS, the climate policy simulator developed by Climate Interactive and MIT and based on System Dynamics, and the audience in the room.

Through an interactive experience, the public will be able to make decisions, build scenarios, and compare different policies—from transportation electrification to energy efficiency to agricultural practices—while observing their real-time effects on variables such as global temperature, energy prices, and sea level rise. By connecting the economy, energy system, and climate, the simulation allows us to understand how seemingly effective interventions can produce consequences different from those expected and why there is no single solution to climate change, but rather a combination of strategies.

The experience will thus concretely demonstrate the value of Systems Thinking in understanding the interdependencies and systemic effects of decisions, offering tools to more consciously address the complexity of climate challenges.

SYDIC at the Science Festival

For SYDIC, participating in the Science Festival represents an important opportunity to bring Systems Thinking and System Dynamics beyond academic and professional contexts, directly involving citizens, students, and young people in experimenting with tools capable of making the consequences of our decisions visible.

The goal will not simply be to talk about climate change, but to allow the public to enter the system, formulate hypotheses, make decisions, and observe their effects, transforming the simulation into a space for learning and discussion.

A concrete way to show how better understanding complex systems can help us make more informed decisions about the future.
