Resilient Food Systems from the Ground Up: The City of Toronto's Approach to Food Policy Development

Municipal and regional governments are important actors in the development of food policies that support resilient city-region food systems. Despite their limited jurisdictional authority over the food system, city regions face pressure related to urban development, agricultural land loss, climate change, public health problems associated with inadequate or poor quality diets, and economic development. These complex challenges require "joined-up" programs and policies that address multiple objectives simultaneously. Drawing on the experience of Toronto, Canada, this presentation will outline the history of the Toronto Food Policy Council, Toronto's Food Strategy and the benefits of a collaborative food policy development approach.
