Donald J. Darnall - Abstract

Role of wholesale and retail markets within complex food systems and the implication of their development for urban planning.

The aim of Dr. Darnall’s speech is to present some of the key elements that contribute to successful retail and wholesale markets, and the impact food markets have within complex urban food systems. Dr. Darnall will use simple system dynamic models to illustrate the evolution of food markets and the basic interrelationships between food market development and urban planning. Dr. Darnall will also briefly review what he considers are reasonable project selection criteria that should be considered by public and private project decision makers when considering the development or enhancement of food markets as part of an overall urban development strategy.
